Dr. Mary McNally is a Professor of Management in the College of Business at Montana State University Billings (MSUB; formerly Eastern Montana College). She has been on the faculty for 25 years, teaching management, business and the environment, and international business. Mary is passionate about teaching and working with students, who have honored her as an outstanding teacher.

A group of MSUB students on a trip to China She is especially interested in sustainable business practices and for the past 10 years has been teaching a unique course on business and the environment. She has also led several short term study abroad trips, taking students to Japan and China. In addition to teaching, Dr. McNally has also served as Interim Dean of the College of Business at MSUB.

Before joining the faculty at MSUB, Dr. McNally won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and worked for three years on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. She was serving as Academic Dean of Sinte Gleska College (now University) when it became the first tribally controlled College to obtain accreditation. Mary has long been active in support of Billing's social and cultural programs and her involvement with conservation and business and environmental issues is practical as well as educational.

Most recently she was a member of the Energy and Conservation Commission for the City of Billings. The Commission was formed as a citizen’s advisory board to review policies and practices regarding energy consumption and conservation, and to make recommendations to the City Council.

As a result of one Commission recommendation, Billings is joining the EPA’s Energy Star Challenge. The Challenge helps municipalities and industries improve energy efficiency and document their progress. Mary is now heading a collaborative MSUB-Billings project that has students working as interns and through course projects to help the City implement and document the Energy Star Challenge.

Mary is also a board member of the Friends of Public Radio and former Board member of Yellowstone County Montana Conservation Voters. She is a cancer survivor, has been a volunteer for Reach to Recovery and participated in the Race for the Cure. She also has served on the boards of the Alberta Bair Theater and Community Seven; and was a long time member of Zonta, an international organization of executives in business and the professions working to advance the status of women. Mary is also an alumnus of Leadership Montana.

Mary's sister, Joan, works with the YWCA's Supported Living Program.

Mary is married to Monte Smith, a geologist. They enjoy living near Pioneer Park, fishing (especially on the Stillwater), hiking in the Beartooths, fossil hunting in the Pryors, and skiing – anywhere! Oh, and then there’s the Harley…
